In 2022, four sailors across the junior, youth and senior pathway have been selected to have subsidised access to our Performance Academy group training, a mentoring programme and team kit through our Performance Academy Sailing Scholarships. We are proud to announce that one of these windsurfers is Abi Smith!

Abi is a 7.8m Techno windsurfer who started her journey through the ASF’s regular participation clubs at the Andrew Simpson Centre in Portsmouth. She was then selected for Zone Squads and started competing nationally. We asked Abi to answer a few questions about what windsurfing means to her and her upcoming goals:

What is your next windsurfing goal?

My goal for the coming year is to race at the Techno Junior World Championships in October in Cyprus, I have just moved up to a 7.8m sail in preparation for the competition.

What does windsurfing mean to you?

To me windsurfing is a chance to go and have fun on the water whilst getting to practice ready for any competitions. It’s great fun and I have made lots of friends.

If you’re not on the water, where or how do you spend your time?

When I am not at school, I spend most of my time windsurfing but on the rare occasions when I don’t have any competitions or training, I like to go outside my house and skateboard with my best friend who’s also my neighbour.
